The street outside is loud by ten in the morning. At five it is mostly the sound of shutters, and of crates being set down carefully so the fruit at the bottom is not bruised.
This sequence follows one narrow lane from the moment the light reaches the roofline to the moment someone stops to ask a price. Nothing here was arranged. The photographs were made across four mornings, in the order the mornings happened.

The lane runs east, so the light reaches the top of the wall first and arrives at the ground about twenty minutes later.
The shutter goes up in one motion, with a shoulder rather than a hand — the same way, at the same hour, every morning.
Behind the counter there is room for one person and a stool. The stock reaches the ceiling and is arranged by how often it is needed, not by size.
Crates come off the van in pairs. The count is spoken out loud, once, and not written down.
A price written on the back of a cardboard box, corrected twice.
A thermos crosses the lane twice before either shop is open.
For about ten minutes after the deliveries stop, nobody in the lane is doing anything in particular.
Everything here happens twice: once for the people who work in the lane, and an hour later for everyone else.
By seven the lane is full and the light is flat. The morning is over, in the way that matters here.
